A great start to a new session! Tonight we had the first class for our winter session of “Draw on This and That”.
For our first night we dove right into colour! We started with a quick review of the colour wheel. Most kids of this age have learned about the colour wheel in school so this was nothing new for these students. We expanded our conversation to discuss colour relationships—especially complimentary colours and how they make each other pop! For the first project of this winter session we will be looking using these complimentary colours and using some new tools to apply them.
To begin, each student received a sheet of paper with three rectangles on it. Each rectangle was created and defined by removable tape that will be removed at the end of this project. Within each square, the students were to apply a layer of crayon. On top of each layer of crayon, the student was to apply a layer of oil pastel in a colour that is complimentary to the crayon colour. The cool and fun thing about this project is that oil pastel does not stick to crayon and because of that you can scrape the oil pastel away to reveal the bright crayon colour below.
For this project we will scrape away oil pastel to draw beautiful and intricate insects. One of the challenges of this drawing is that we are drawing in a kind of reverse method. Instead of drawing shadows, we scrape away to reveal highlights and let the shadows be created by the oil pastel that we leave behind. The result is intense—talk about making colours pop! Below you can see how some of our first bugs turned out with a layer of blue oil pastel on orange crayon. The orange against the blue seems to be almost neon! The contrast is stunning and my students did a fantastic job of creating the detail. Do have a look—
More to come next week with our next insect in this three panel design!
